Everybody knew Abigail was one of the hardest working students in the class and that she had excellent grades. Abigail was a tall, good-looking girl, just starting her teenage years. Her honey-colored hair was long and straight and thick bangs covered her forehead, slightly hiding her beautiful, almond eyes, and their serious gaze. Her pale complexion gently emphasized a brown beauty spot slightly protruding from the middle of her chin. Even though Abigail was quiet and a little shy, she had good girl friends and she was well liked by the boys too. She was considered popular by the sixth graders at school.

By Halloween, Abigail felt she was finding it difficult to understand the new material in math. It was very important to her to do well, since this subject was held in high regard by her family, and she did not want to disappoint her parents. Her older brothers did very well in math and were the family’s pride and joy. For this reason, Abigail asked her mother to find a math tutor who would give her extra lessons after school. Soon afterwards, Abigail started going to extra lessons with a private math teacher and a strong bond formed between the two. Thanks to the extra lessons, Abigail quickly noticed a great improvement in her achievements in math and she was very proud of herself.

When spring came, registration to middle school was at its peak and many students took placement exams. The students were supposed to get their placements results just before spring break. Most of the students with high grades applied to the science program, and everyone was sure that Abigail would be one of the first to be admitted to the prestigious program. Abigail, who also felt confident, waited impatiently for her results. She had already planned registering for a special course during the summer vacation, which would prepare her for her middle school studies.

One of the most outstanding students in the class was Gilad. He was the class clown, an outstanding athlete, well liked and very popular. He hardly put any effort into his schoolwork, but he was one of those students to whom everything came easily. His grades were excellent.

Gilad used to make fun of the girls for being “wonks” and for never taking their noses out of their books and notebooks, whereas he on the other hand, made very little effort and did better than they did.

One morning, Gilad came to class and told everybody that he had received a letter announcing he had been admitted to the science program. Everybody was happy for him, and when Abigail heard about it, she thought that she would probably get an affirmative answer too tomorrow or the day after that. She looked forward to it impatiently but did not say a word.
